NARS pre-hospital nurse and full time lecturer in Paramedic Science at the University of East Anglia.
Can you tell us about what you do for NARS and as your day job?
I am a pre-hospital nurse volunteer for NARS, working as part of the team with doctors and paramedics to support people who are critically ill, supporting or leading on the care. I have worked with NARS for two years and also sometimes do shifts at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals in the acute and emergency areas. My day job is as a lecturer in paramedic science at the UEA.
Why did you join NARS?
It is a really inspiring charity and I used to work in the emergency department at hospital and always admired the work of NARS, and how the volunteers do it. When they asked nurses to join the team, I jumped at the chance. My husband is also a paramedic with NARS and we go out with NARS at least every other week. Often we will be the first at the scene and it is a scary time for the person, and it isn’t just the clinical side but the human factor too we deal with – being there for someone on a human level.
Why is it an important charity?
We care for all ages, a poorly baby right through to an older person suffering a cardiac arrest, or someone who has had a nasty fall or been involved in a road traffic collision. Also we don’t just do critical care, but training and education too in schools and life support. We also did an event last year where we got people off the streets and gave them some basic CPR training and how to save lives with critical compresses.
What do you do in any spare time you get?
I am either at a fitness class, like boxercise or aquafit, or curled up under a duvet! Also I enjoy going to the cinema and socialising with friends.
How are you preparing for the walk?
I am carb loading! I am also going to the gym and my dad likes walking, so going on some walks with him. My son is also motivating me to go to the gym.
What are you looking forward to about the walk?
Seeing all the girls – in fact Laura was one of my students. It will be nice to get to know them and I know the challenge will be on day two, and some focus will definitely be needed. Let’s hope the weather is on our side too! Lots of chocolate will also be needed.
