The Emergency First Aid course is designed for lower risk workplaces whose needs assessment does not require an employee to hold a formal full First Aid at Work course, or where additional staff need training to support the first aider(s). It provides learners with essential skills and knowledge to confidently provide immediate lifesaving assistance in an emergency.

Guidance on producing a first aid needs assessment can be found in the HSE document First Aid at Work (third edition).


  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Assess an incident
  • Manage an unresponsive casualty
  • Basic Life Support and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) familiarisation
  • Recognise and manage a choking casualty
  • Recognise and manage a casualty with external bleeding
  • Recognise and manage a casualty in shock
  • Recognise and manage a casualty suffering from a seizure
  • Manage minor injuries

Assessment: This course is assessed through ongoing assessment of practical skill and a written knowledge assessment (usually completed as the course progresses as opposed to a final written exam). There is no final summative assessment.

Certification: HABC Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (QCF)


Minimum age 16 years.
No previous first aid experience necessary.
