Many people are frightened to intervene when faced with a paediatric emergency; this course provides the knowledge and confidence to render safe and effective care.

This 2 day (12 hour) course meets OFSTED and Early Years Foundation Stage requirements for paediatric first aid training. It is aimed at any child care professional who works with children and / or babies and will provide both knowledge, skills and confidence to act effectively should a paediatric emergency occur.

The course is based around the criteria for effective paediatric first aid training found in Appendix 1 of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Practice Guidance document for course development and structure. It is typically undertaken by groups such as nursery staff, teachers, Learning Support Assistants, Childminders, holiday camp staff or parent and toddler group volunteers.

 

Unit 1, Emergency Paediatric First Aid

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of the Paediatric First Aider
  • Safely assess and emergency situation
  • Manage an unresponsive infant or child
  • Basic Life Support and Automated External Defibrillation familiarisation.
  • Recognise and manage an infant or child with a foreign body airway obstruction
  • Manage an infant or child suffering external bleeding
  • Recognise and manage an infant or child suffering with shock
  • Recognise and manage an infant or child suffering with anaphylaxis.

Unit 2, Managing paediatric illness, injury and emergencies

  • Recognising and managing infants and children with bone, joint and muscle injuries
  • Recognising and managing infants and children with head and spinal injuries
  • Recognising and managing infants and children suffering conditions affecting eyes, ears and the nose
  • Recognise and manage infants and children suffering chronic medical conditions or sudden illness
  • Recognise infants and children suffering the effects of extreme heat or cold
  • Recognise and manage an infant or child who has suffered an electric shock
  • Recognise and manage an infant or child suffering burns
  • Recognise and manage an infant or child who has been poisoned
  • Recognise and manage an infant or child who has been bitten or stung
  • Recognise and manage an infant or child with minor injuries
  • Understand how to complete records relating to illnesses, injuries and emergencies

This course is assessed through ongoing assessment of practical skill and a written knowledge assessment (usually completed as the course progresses as opposed to a final written exam). There is no final summative assessment.

Certification: HABC Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF)

 

Minimum age 16 years.
No previous first aid experience necessary.
